Performance of Kain Karawahn and Janna Wächter - Libreria Sull'Isola/Stromboli 17.III.05

The american opera-performer Janna Wächter has the magmatic quality to transform average spaces and/or normal rooms in between seconds into artistic stages by her song performance only. It doesn't matter, if you meet her at the fish market in Seattle, or in a cab in Naples or as she did so in 2001, when she was standing as close as it is "safe" to the crater of Stromboli and suddenly started to improvise a duett together with volcanic live sounds - actually a loop of this historical concert was part of the exhibition eruzione d'arte a Stromboli. It was placed as a sound installation in the stairway floor of the Canonica di San Bartolo. After several artistic collaborations together with Kain Karawahn for both it was time now again to create another world premiere, which actually happened in the one and only bookstore on Stromboli, the Libreria Sull'Isola.

On the highest point inside the bookstore due to the concept of Karawahn Wächter had to light an italian book on World War II. With the singing book in one hand she had both, text to sing and light to read the words of course - she could sing only, what she was able to catch coincidently, because it burned away in the next moment - that way fragments of italian sentences destilled themselves, becoming the real text of Wächter's improvisations - while singing further on her way out of the bookstore into the dark garden it was safe for her to go only there where her book lamp lit the direction naturally - as long as she had reached more light spending books ... the temporary installation "title eruptions" of Karawahn were made of four books. Each book was stabilized spreadly on its hardcover rims with their long parts upside down. Shaped like volcanos flames and glow could be seen on all spines, had produced little craters in some of them ...

Of course to read what is left behind the horizon of occurence exceeds human senses but all information about the matter are still there although it is burned. Recent researches in quantum physics has confirmed yet what occurs in reality can be played back. "When you throw an encyclopaedia in the fire place it seems that the information will be lost," says Hermann Nicolai of the Albert-Einstein-Institut of Golm near by Potsdam in the german newspaper (Süddeutsche Zeitung 23.07.2004, S.9). "Actually you could identify all letters of the burning book, when you follow both, its radiation and its atoms in the smoke." The information comes back.

Each eruption carries all information of its current transformed and transported content. The deciphering of that development is theorized scientificly, but its translation into practice lets burn big question marks. That is the challenge to start with art. When artistic mediums will be in charge for the search of answers, knowlegdes in the quality of Bernard Chouet ones might be able to discover. Chouet had involved artistic methods to interpretate a certain type of seismic waves of uprising magma as musical occurences. He started to speak of each volcano's melody, which he had played sometimes on church organs too, which finally brought him to "compose" volcano-type-specific prognosis for eruptions. Since many years he succeeded in the prezise prediction of volcano eruptions, for instance the eruption of Redoubt in Alaska 1989 and Popocatapetl in Mexiko 1990.
