Performance/Installation with 1.500 candles by Kain Karawahn - Canonica di San Bartolo/Stromboli 17.III. 2005

A candle is lit und placed on the floor. Another one is lit in the flame of the burning candle and then placed very close to the first burning candle. Then next one ... another one etc.. The procedure to get 1.500 candles - in Stromboli were only 1.000 white ones were avaible - lit on the floor can take between 1,5 and 3 hours. It depends on the spectator's cooperation, because they are allowed to take candles from the depot continue the performance by themselves.

After a certain number of candles is standing closely together the selfpotencialized warmth of this sculpture makes the wax melting very quick. Then the liquid wax starts to flow like lava out of the candles' crater, following in its own way due to the floor's grade incline and/or the directions will be controlled by artistic manipulations. This implifies the work to create new burning candle islands on the cooled and rigid waxplates until those start to melt again too. Beside this there many any development in the range of light, warmth and colors - on Stromboli there were no colored candles available. The longer the work burns, the more it develops itself to an expanded installation. During the period of an exhibition some candles can be lit again.

The process WAXIMUM includes combinations of various artistic mediums like performance, installation, painting, sculpture, photography and video. Personally I do photograph different phases of the warmth-light-work, to exhibited those selforganizations of lightwaximums as independent artworks later.
