Lauffeuer/running fire

Installation by Kain Karawahn - Ficogrande/Stromboli 18.III. 2005

The work Running fire belongs to the series brands/DUFTMARKEN in which the matter to burn is always toiletpaper, which existence is appreciated by the abundance of mental eruptions carrying paper mediums. Printed paper can be recycled five times ultimately for the purpose to print on it again. For their sixth time all books, magazines, newspapers etc. are destinated only to be reborn as toilet paper. This final stadium of former literature, knowledge and news allows marvelous processes of consume in both, intimate and public places. Then and there burning toiletpaper originalizes literally as the final finishing in form of light, warmth and smoke developments. Of course to read what is left behind the horizon of occurence exceeds human senses but all information about the matter are still there although it is burned. Recent researches in quantum physics has confirmed yet what occurs in reality can be played back. "When you throw an encyclopaedia in the fire place it seems that the information will be lost," says Hermann Nicolai of the Albert-Einstein-Institute of Golm near by Potsdam in a german newspaper (Süddeutsche Zeitung 23.07.2004, S.9). "Actually you could identify all letters of the burning book, when you follow both, its radiation and its atoms in the smoke." The information comes back.

According to the origin of toiletpaper as literature, thrown away, shred and recycled, which has exceeded then the horinzon of occurrence for its first time, Kain Karawahn used 80 rolls of it for a temporary installation. The icon of the fleeing man, a sign which doesn't exist on STROMBOLI before 2003 publicly, was pointed metre by metre on black sand (square of 25 x 25 metres). During sunset, both sun und man flee without leaving any tracks of their matter afterwards. This quantum physical reading was exactly glown away in an area of STROMBOLI, which had experienced some of the worst destructions of the Tsunami from 30.XII.2002. This occurence had actually become the source for the pictographs - at each corner of the streets on STROMBOLI the fleeing man shows where to run - towards the volcano, because the danger comes from the sea, which swallows daily one sun in the evening.
